I am blessed to have discovered Santa Fe, New Mexico. In November of 1968, I was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Good friends from my University of Illinois at Champaign days had moved there and invited me to have Thanksgiving with them. It was love at first sight. Santa Fe was really a very small town then and completely different from any place I had ever visited in America. I knew if I survived my military experience that I would move to Santa Fe. I did survive (I guess) and proceeded to move here in June of 1970.

The very first place I looked to live was on Tano Road. At the end of this crude dirt road, I found the old Sam Marsh Ranch which came furnished with the most spectacular views of the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo Mountains I had ever seen. As fate would have it, this was the first of three homes I would occupy on Tano Road where I live to this day.

Creating this work hasn’t always been easy (or pretty) but it has always been a magical adventure. Inspired by the beauty of Mother Earth and focused by the absolute peace and tranquility I found on Tano Road, I thrived under the billowing clouds and big sky of northern New Mexico.

Thank you all who have supported me these many long years. And thank you most of all to the Native American and Hispanic cultures that have so influenced this land, my life and my work.

The Tavlos "Classics" is but a reflection of my work over the past thirty-three years. This body of work represents all the original pieces that are left in my personal collection…a retrospective of sorts! Parting is such sweet sorrow so prices on these pieces are only available upon request.

Enjoy,

The Coyote
T
wenty years ago, Tavlos threw back his head and howled. Then he created Coyote, and dropped a plumb line straight from the critter's nose to the tip of his toes. The whole world took one look, grabbed the design, and plastered it on everything from earrings to lamps to who knows what else? This whole sale theft has annoyed the artist, but he is secure in the knowledge that nobody, except Tavlos of course, can get the suave and dangerous Coyote's personality exactly right

The Land of Enchantment Series
Guess what? This is absolute realism! This is why New Mexico is called The Land of Enchantment. It actually looks like this... if you can get past the old habits and cultural conditioning that have taught you to see it in ordinary colors and dimensions.t

The Retavlos
The full name of Santa Fe is La Villa Real de Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assis, or the Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi. Little wonder that Spanish altar pieces, called retablos, are found everywhere hereabouts. So it's only natural that Tavlos would take up the artform to express his big wonder at the wonderfulness of it all.t
